April 12th Newsletter

Hello St Leo Community!

Congratulations to our wonderful Principal for her nomination, by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), for Educational Leader of the Year Award 2019.  Best wishes to you Mrs. Ugrin!

Below are all the updates you need for the coming weeks:

  1. St Leo’s has organized an EQAO presentation for parents which will take place on Monday May 6th at 6:30 pm in the school library.  All are welcome.  (Author’s note - in the lead up to the EQAO assessments last year, I attended such a presentation and found it very informative and useful.)

  2. Santa Maria CS is hosting the motivational speaker, Sara Westbrook, on June 11th at 6:30 pm.  All are welcome to attend, but if you plan to attend, please let us know so that we can give Santa Maria an idea of numbers.

Reminders in case you missed them the first time:

  • The annual book fair will take place the week of May 6th.  We are still looking for a number of volunteers to make the book fair a success.  Please see below the times and dates and numbers of volunteers we require.  Please let me know ASAP if you can volunteer for any of the times notes below. Thank you to those who have already put their name forward.

  • The Ontario government has outlined cuts to education.  If you are concerned, attached you will find a template letter than you can personalize and send directly to our MPP – Christine Hogarth at christine.hogarth@pc.ola.org.  Please take the time to consider the impact these cuts will have on your children’s education.

  • In an effort to minimize waste in our school, the St. Leo ECO Team is introducing Boomerang Tuesdays.  To encourage our community to review and think about the way we prepare and package lunch foods each day, on Tuesdays all lunch packaging that comes to the school will return home in lunch bags that evening.  The purpose of the Boomerang Lunch is not to transfer trash disposal responsibilities from the school to home, but rather to reduce the amount of trash altogether.  For instance, is a juice box necessary?  How about using a reusable bottle for water or juice, not just Tuesdays, but every day.  Thank you ECO Team for continuing to push us towards becoming a greener school!

  • To show support for their autistic colleagues, students are invited to wear any shade of blue every Friday in April.

  • The school Easter mass will take place on Friday April 26th at 9:30 am.  Everyone is welcome.

  • The April Virtue Assembly will take place on Friday April 26th at 1:00 pm.  Everyone is welcome.

  • Grade 7 Confirmation will be held on Sunday April 28th at 4:00 p.m.

  • Grade 2 First Holy Communion will be held on Sunday May 5th at 4:00 p.m.

  • The dates for Grade 3 and Grade 6 EQAO testing this year is the week of May 27th.  Please keep this in mind and refrain from booking appointments for your child/ren between May 27th and May 31st.  If you would like more information about EQAO testing, please visit the EQAO website at www.EQAO.com

  • The Annual St Leo Silent Auction and Parent night is on Friday April 26th at 7:30 p.m. at the Maple Leaf on Lakeshore.  See attached.  You can purchase your tickets through cash-on-line or by sending the attached form back to school with your child.  Thanks to everyone who has agreed to volunteered to make this another great auction.  If you have goods that you would like to donate for the auction or would like to volunteer – please respond to this email.

Have a blessed Holy Week.
